Frequently Asked Questions

Can I claim back for physiotherapy appointments on insurance?

Yes, many insurance companies cover the cost of complementary therapies including physiotherapy appointments. Whilst we cannot process direct claims, we can provide invoices and support to help you claim your money back.

How long does a physiotherapy session last?

Canine/small animal initial treatment: 1.15 hrs

Canine/small animal follow-up treatment: 1 hr

Equine initial treatment: 1.30 hrs

Equine follow-up treatment: 1hr

Please note timings are approximate and may vary depending on the type/temperament of animal.

How many sessions will my pet/ animal need?

This will vary depending on your animal's condition and will be discussed with you during your appointment. Maintenance sessions are recommended every 6 weeks - 3 months depending on the season, job, and workload of your animal.

What types of animals do you treat?

Whilst we predominantly treat dogs and horses, Optimum Veterinary Physiotherapy is happy to treat all animals great and small! A few 'other' animals we have treated include cows, alpacas, cats, and rabbits.

Do I need a referral from my vet for physiotherapy?

Yes, under the Veterinary Surgeons (Exemptions Order) 2015, physiotherapy must be prescribed by a vet. This is to ensure a full, up-to-date clinical history is obtained, allowing us to tailor our treatments to each individual animal. As standard, veterinary consent will be renewed every 6 months, however, should your animal's condition/health status change, this may be renewed sooner. Regular updates will be communicated with your vet throughout your animal's physiotherapy journey.

What should I expect during an initial assessment?

To begin with, we will discuss your animal's clinical history before completing a full static, dynamic and palpation assessment. We will then discuss our assessment findings with you and complete a full treatment based on these. Following treatment, we will discuss a home-exercise programme for your animal; this will also be emailed to you within 48 hours of your appoinement.

Which payment methods are accepted?

As per our Terms and Conditions, the accepted methods of payment are cash and bank transfer, cheque payments will be refused. Payment is required in full prior to, or on the day of treatment. â€‹

How do I know if my pet/animal needs physiotherapy?

All animals can benefit from physiotherapy - whether they are a top athlete, or much-loved companion! Physiotherapy is typically recommended for rehabilitation (following a diagnosis and/or injury), maintenance (to optimising function and performance), long-term condition management and palliative care cases. As an owner, a sign that your animal may need physiotherapy is an alteration in your animal's movement, behaviour or performance. For example, you may notice your dog is becoming stiff after their usual walk, or your horse is less supple when working on a particular rein. If you are unsure whether your animal would benefit from physiotherapy, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Are mobile physiotherapy sessions as effective as clinic-based sessions?

Yes, our mobile sessions offer the same high-quality service and expertise as clinic-based treatments. All equipment will be brought to your home or yard, taking the stress of a clinic and travelling away from your animal!

What should I do after my pets phsyiotherapy session?

Following each appointment, aftercare instructions and a home exercise programme will be discussed and emailed across to you. We typically recommend a rest period of 1-2 days post treatment, as this allows the tissues to maximally respond to treatment.
